With governments (both local and national) around the world declaring a climate emergency this gallery of photographs sets about showing the effects, influences and potential solutions that are part of global warming and climate change. These environmental landscapes show water, wind and solar power and how it affects our natural environment both positively and negatively using imagery that is both powerful and beautiful at the same time.
Environmental location photography is all about the light and the weather so needs careful planning coupled with the ability to act spontaneously to any sudden changes to the weather, the lighting or the atmospheric conditions. The best photographs are often captured at a furious pace after a prolonged period of inactivity and hanging around, waiting. Preparation is the key to understanding what could happen and where it will happen if the conditions prevail and, being British and a photographer, I’m obviously obsessed with the weather and the weather forecast!
As a specialist environmental photographer it’s important to have the correct equipment, and I don't just mean camera equipment, which is obvious. Appropriate clothing is vital and needs to have the ability to keep me both warm and dry, as standing around for long periods in even cool weather can be surprisingly cold. All my outer winter clothing has a durable water repellent (DWR) coating to prevent rain from soaking into my clothes and shoes, and all my outdoor clothing is breathable to allow humidity and water vapour to escape, preventing the inside of my clothes getting wet.
Camera and lenses need to be weather resistant so that they continue to work under the most testing of conditions. I have done shoots in sub-zero temperatures in Scandinavia and have seen moisture settle on my camera and watched a frost cover the camera as the water vapour froze on it! My camera continued to work flawlessly and it is this performance that I need to depend upon to be able to create the best environmental photographs under the most testing of conditions.
